Request an amendment or make a complaint about an article

We’re sorry if any piece of ours has caused offence or has included material you feel is factually inaccurate. At TCS we are dedicated to ethical journalism, so we want to hear your complaint. We ask before you make it that you read our code of conduct and consider these few additional points:

  1. We are a student publication and although we will endeavour to carefully consider any complaint we recieve, it may take us a few days to talk to the relevant parties involved and get round to addressing your issue.

  2. We will strongly consider any complaints that deal with factual inaccuracies or clear violations of the standards we have set ourselves as our publication in our code of conduct. As an independent newspaper however we assert our right to editorialise and campaign freely as set out by the IPSO. We strongly recommend consulting their editors code and the corresponding codebook (which provides examples) before making a complaint not related to factual material.

  3. If we feel your complaint has pointed out to us a failing in our editorial standard we will endeavour to resolve it quickly via an amendment. At TCS we also believe in authorial rights, so this will be done with the authors involvement and consent. As such, the author will need to see the content of the complaint, though we will request your permission to do this beforehand. The article will then appear in the amended form with a note to that effect.

  4. If we are unable to reach an initial agreement with you regarding an amendment a few additional steps may be possible:

    • In extreme cases, and pending availability, members of the editorial staff may be able to meet with you in consultation to explain why the piece is not able to be altered.

    • If the issue is about a specific interpretation of events or coverage of a given issue, we always welcome opposing views. If you, or anyone else you know, would like to write a piece from a different perspective TCS will always consider it, as long as it is factually accurate and designed to express your views on the matter, rather than attack another author.

  5. All response you recieve from our editorial team should be considered ‘private and personal’ correspondance and is thus not suitable for publication anywhere, including on social media.

  6. We will not consider any complaints that are abusive in language or nature towards any of our writers or our editorial staff
